UEFA confirmed the name that from the 2021-22 season will have the new European competition. The will share the bill with the Champions League and the Europa League and will give “more opportunities for clubs from more countries to have the option to participate in European football.”
The new competition details are these as confirmed by the UEFA Executive in 2018.
The new competition will be reflected in the current UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League and will feature 32 teams in the group stage.
The format will feature eight groups of four teams, followed by a round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals and final.
An additional knockout stage will be played before the round of 16 between the seconds of each group and the third in the UEFA Europa League group stage.
The new competition will feature 141 games for 15 weeks, exactly like the UEFA Europa League.
The champion of this new competition will participate in the UEFA Europa League the following season.
The new games in the competition will be played on Thursdays. As such, the UEFA Champions League continues to be played on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and the UEFA Europa League and the new competition will be played on Thursday with an additional starting time slot for a limited number of matches, in principle at 4:30 p.m. ( HEC), which will be defined later.
